About Fouriesburg

Set in the Free State mountain scenery, this town leads hikers past a large number of Bushman paintings, some of which are well preserved. Its attractive location and the range of activities offered make this town a popular venue for family vacations.

There are three different hiking trails on the Bushman Cave hiking trail, from 3 to 16 km in length:

  • The Hoenderkop Hiking Trail leads to the castle
  • The Old Fort Hiking Trail is shorter and follows an easy route to a cave with Bushman paintings
  • The Bird Trail is a short walk to a valley near the overnight camp, filled with plenty of birds to see

Visit the sandstone church, the blockhouse (only 2 of it's type in the country) & museum, where former commandos camped. Pres Steyn House -the lowly dwelling of the former Free State President.

The Fouriesburg Country Inn is steeped in history and the facades are taken from historical railway buildings. The underground wine cellar is also an unique feature.

Come experience the clean fresh air and the beautiful sights and sounds of this quiet little town in the Eastern-Freestate.
